AC leak causing mold and sneezing: DIY or professional?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in our bedroom has been leaking a little onto the carpet for a while, and now I'm seeing a few small black patches in the corner behind the wardrobe. My husband has been sneezing a lot more in the mornings and I'm starting to worry it's connected. Is this something we can tackle ourselves with vinegar and a good scrub, or do we need to call in a professional cleaning service here in Dubai to make sure it's gone for good?

Based on your description, this situation requires professional attention and is not suitable for a DIY approach. The combination of a persistent AC leak, visible black microbial growth, and correlating health symptoms (morning sneezing is a classic indicator of exposure to elevated spore levels) points to a developing indoor environmental issue.
The UAE's high humidity and year-round reliance on AC systems create a perfect environment for mold proliferation. An AC leak provides the constant moisture necessary for colonies to establish themselves, often within the unit's drip pan, ductwork, and insulation, which are not visible. Simply scrubbing the visible patches on the carpet with vinegar is a superficial solution. Vinegar is not an EPA-registered biocide and will not address the root moisture problem or the hyphal fragments and mycotoxins that can remain and continue to cause allergic reactions. More critically, it does not remediate the contamination within the AC system itself, which will continue to aerosolize spores throughout the room every time the unit operates. For a comprehensive resolution, a professional inspection is essential. We would conduct air and surface sampling to identify the species and concentration levels, assess the extent of contamination within the AC unit, and locate any hidden moisture using thermal imaging. Remediation then involves containing the area, HEPA vacuuming, antimicrobial treatment of affected materials, and, crucially, addressing the AC leak and sanitizing the entire system to prevent immediate recurrence, in line with IICRC S520 standards. Given the health symptoms, we strongly advise against handling this yourself.
