Mold behind wardrobe causing coughs: clean or call pro?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing a lot lately and I’m starting to worry. I pulled out a few winter blankets from the back of the wardrobe in our spare bedroom and found patches of black and green mold all over the back wall and on some of the clothes. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed it now after the recent humidity. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach or do I absolutely need to call a professional company?

Based on your description, this is a serious situation that requires immediate professional attention, not a DIY bleach cleanup. The presence of visible mold covering a wall and the associated respiratory symptoms in your children are significant red flags.

The black and green patches indicate a likely mixed colony, which could include toxigenic species like Stachybotrys (black mold) or Aspergillus. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and clothing; it only bleaches the surface color and does not kill the root system (hyphae). More critically, disturbing the mold by cleaning it yourself will aerosolize a massive amount of spores and mycotoxins, drastically increasing your family's exposure and potentially worsening the coughs.

This scenario is classic in Dubai due to our high ambient humidity, especially recently, combined with cold spots created by year-round AC. The back of a wardrobe on an exterior wall is a prime location for condensation to form, creating the perfect environment for mold growth you may not notice for months.

A professional inspection is absolutely necessary. We would conduct a thorough assessment to identify the moisture source (likely condensation or a hidden leak), perform air and surface sampling to determine the spore count and species present (adhering to UAE environmental health guidelines), and then execute a controlled remediation. This process involves containment with negative air pressure, HEPA filtration, specialized antimicrobials for biocidal cleaning, and finally, post-remediation verification to ensure the environment is safe.

For the health of your family, I strongly advise against handling this yourself. Please contact our certified team for an immediate inspection. Call 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule an assessment.
