Is black mold causing my husband's sinus issues?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a huge patch of black mold behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom, probably from the humidity. My husband has been having terrible sinus headaches and a constant stuffy nose for the past month, and I'm starting to worry it's connected. We had a bit of a leak from the upstairs bathroom a while back that we thought was fixed. How dangerous is this kind of mold and should we get the whole family out of the house until it's professionally removed?

Based on your description, it is highly probable that the black mold growth behind your wardrobe is contributing to your husband's sinus headaches and congestion. The proximity of the mold to your sleeping area, combined with the history of a water leak, creates a significant exposure risk. In the humid climate of Dubai, where air conditioning runs year-round, condensation and undetected moisture behind furniture are common, creating an ideal breeding ground for mold spores.

The type of mold is a critical factor. While the term "black mold" often refers to Stachybotrys chartarum, which can produce mycotoxins and is associated with more severe health effects, other common molds like Aspergillus or Cladosporium can also cause the allergic symptoms you describe, including chronic sinusitis, headaches, and respiratory irritation. Only professional air and surface sampling can confirm the species and concentration, which dictates the remediation protocol.

Given the size of the infestation ("huge patch") and the clear health symptoms, we strongly recommend a professional inspection. DIY removal is not advised for large areas, as improper handling can aerosolize spores and spread contamination throughout the villa. While immediate evacuation is typically reserved for vulnerable individuals (immunocompromised, severe asthma), reducing exposure is wise. We recommend sealing off the bedroom and relocating until assessment.

Our certified inspectors at Saniservice use advanced tools like moisture meters and thermal imaging to identify the full extent of the moisture source and contamination, in line with UAE standards for environmental health. We provide a detailed report and a scope of work for safe, effective remediation. For immediate consultation, please call us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com.
