Black mold on leather in closet: DIY clean or call pro?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet on the outside wall has started to get these small black spots on the leather shoes and bags I have stored there. I noticed it about two weeks ago and it's slowly getting worse, even though I run the AC constantly. Is this something I can clean myself with a vinegar solution or do I need to call in a professional mold removal company?

Based on your description, this is a classic case of mold growth exacerbated by the Dubai climate. The outside wall of your closet is likely a thermal bridge, where the temperature difference between the hot, humid outdoor air and your cooled indoor space causes condensation to form within the wall cavity or on the interior surface. This hidden moisture, combined with the organic material of your leather goods (which mold uses as a food source), creates the perfect environment for proliferation.

While a vinegar solution can kill surface mold on non-porous materials, it is not recommended for leather. Vinegar can damage and discolor the material, and more critically, it will not address the root cause: the hidden moisture source within your wall. Simply cleaning the visible spots is a temporary fix; the mold will almost certainly return.

The slow but persistent spread you've observed indicates an active moisture issue. In the UAE, such problems require professional assessment. Our standard protocol involves using thermal imaging cameras to identify the exact location and extent of condensation within the wall and moisture meters to quantify the problem. This diagnosis is crucial, as the wall may require targeted drying or insulation upgrades to prevent recurrence.

For your valuable leather items, professional hygienization is advised. We use specialized, non-abrasive antimicrobial treatments designed for delicate materials to safely eradicate the mold spores without causing damage.

I strongly recommend a professional inspection. Our certified experts at Saniservice can diagnose the hidden moisture source and provide a permanent solution. Please call us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for a comprehensive assessment.
