Can I clean this black mold myself or need a pro?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it’s from the black mold I just found behind our bedroom wardrobe. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed it when I was rearranging the room, and the patch is about the size of a dinner plate with a really strong damp smell. Is this something I can clean myself with vinegar or bleach, or do I absolutely need to call one of those professional mold remediation companies here?

Based on the description of your situation, I strongly recommend against attempting to clean this yourself and advise you to contact a professional remediation company immediately for an inspection.

The size of the patch (a dinner plate), the strong damp smell, and the fact it has been growing undetected for a potential two years are significant red flags. This indicates a substantial moisture issue, likely from a hidden leak or severe condensation buildup behind the wardrobe. In Dubai's high-humidity climate, exacerbated by year-round AC use which can create cold spots and condensation, mold can penetrate deep into building materials like drywall and plaster. Surface cleaning with vinegar or bleach is a temporary fix that will not address the root moisture problem or remove the deeply entrenched hyphae (root system), leading to rapid regrowth. More critically, disturbing the mold during cleaning will aerosolize a high concentration of spores and mycotoxins, potentially severely worsening your children's respiratory symptoms.

The health effects on your children are the primary concern. Professional remediation is not just about removal; it involves comprehensive containment to prevent cross-contamination, industrial-grade HEPA filtration to purify the air, and identifying the exact moisture source to guarantee the problem is solved permanently. For a case of this suspected duration and size, professional intervention is absolutely necessary.

Please do not attempt to clean this. For a proper assessment and safe remediation, I urge you to call our certified team at Saniservice on 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com. We can conduct a thorough inspection and provide a resolution that ensures your family's health and safety.
