Black mold in AC vent: DIY clean or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been making a weird damp smell for a couple of months, and now I’m seeing black spots around the air vent on the ceiling. I tried wiping it with vinegar, but it came back within a week. Is this something I can tackle myself with stronger cleaning stuff, or is it time to call in a professional?

Based on your description, this is a classic case of mold contamination within your AC system, a very common issue in Dubai due to our high humidity and year-round reliance on air conditioning. The damp smell indicates microbial growth, and the recurrent black spots around the vent are a visible confirmation. The fact that it returned after a DIY vinegar clean is a significant red flag.

Vinegar and other surface-level cleaners are ineffective for this problem. The visible growth on the ceiling is merely the fruiting body; the main hyphae (root structure) is likely growing deep within the ductwork and on the cooling coils themselves, which you cannot access or properly treat without specialized equipment. Attempting a stronger DIY chemical clean is not advised, as improper use can damage AC components, create hazardous fumes, and fail to address the root cause, leading to rapid regrowth and potential health issues from airborne spores.

In the UAE, proper mold remediation requires adherence to specific standards to ensure it is eliminated, not just hidden. This necessitates professional assessment and intervention. Our certified inspectors use borescopes to inspect inside ducts and air quality tests to identify the spore types and concentration levels.

For a thorough and permanent solution, I strongly recommend you call in a professional. Our team at Saniservice is equipped with industrial-grade HEPA filtration, antimicrobial fogging, and steam cleaning technologies designed to sanitize your entire AC system safely and effectively.
