AC mold on wall: DIY fix or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been leaking a bit for a couple of weeks, and now I’m seeing a bunch of black and green fuzzy spots spreading on the wall behind the curtain. I wiped it with vinegar, but it came back even darker. Is this something I can tackle myself with a stronger cleaner, or do I need to call in a professional?

Based on your description, this is a classic case of HVAC-induced mold growth, a common issue in Dubai due to our high humidity and year-round reliance on air conditioning. The AC leakage has created a persistent moisture source, which, combined with organic material in the wall (like dust or paint), provides the perfect environment for mold colonies to establish themselves.

Your attempt with vinegar was a common DIY approach, but it is insufficient. Vinegar is a surface-level treatment that does not address the root cause: the moisture from the leak and the mycotoxins and hyphae (the root-like structures) that have penetrated the porous wall material. The mold's return, darker and more widespread, indicates a resilient and active colony.

For a situation involving significant visible growth and an ongoing water source from an AC unit, a professional inspection is not just recommended; it is essential. DIY attempts with stronger, potentially hazardous chemicals can agitate the spores, causing them to become airborne and spread throughout your living space, significantly increasing the health risk and the scope of contamination. Furthermore, improper handling violates the Dubai Municipality's strict health and safety guidelines for indoor environmental quality.

The remediation protocol requires first identifying and rectifying the AC leak to eliminate the moisture source. Then, the affected wall area must be professionally assessed to determine the extent of penetration. Specialized equipment like moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras are used for this. Remediation involves containment of the area, HEPA filtration to capture airborne spores, and the application of UAE-approved antimicrobial agents to eliminate the colony at its roots.
