How to clean and prevent mold in Dubai apartment closet?« Back to Previous Page

My apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has been feeling extra humid this summer and I just found a patch of black, speckled stuff in the back of my walk-in wardrobe where I keep my winter clothes. I run the AC constantly but it's a dark, enclosed space with no ventilation. I’m worried it’s going to spread to my clothes and cause health issues. What’s the best way to clean this safely and prevent it from coming back in a high-humidity climate like Dubai?

Based on your description of a dark, enclosed, and non-ventilated space in JVC with high humidity, you are almost certainly dealing with a mold colony, and the black, speckled appearance is a common indicator. The constant AC use creates a significant temperature differential between the cooled room and the warmer wall cavities, leading to condensation—this trapped moisture is the primary fuel for mold growth in Dubai.

For a small patch (less than one square meter), you may attempt to clean it yourself with caution. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. A solution of detergent and warm water is often sufficient for surface mold on non-porous materials. For more persistent growth, a diluted bleach solution (1 part bleach to 10 parts water) can be used, but be aware it may not prevent regrowth and can damage some materials. Never mix bleach with ammonia. Discard any moldy porous items like cardboard boxes.

However, the presence of visible growth often indicates a more significant humidity problem within the wall assembly. Simply cleaning the surface will not address the underlying condensation issue, leading to almost certain regrowth. In a climate like the UAE's, where humidity is a constant challenge, professional assessment is highly recommended.

Our certified inspectors use thermal imaging cameras to identify hidden moisture and condensation points and hygrometers to measure relative humidity within the space. This allows us to diagnose the root cause and prescribe a targeted remediation plan, which may include improving ventilation, installing a dehumidifier, or applying specialized antimicrobial coatings to prevent recurrence.
