Can I clean mold myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing a lot and I suspect it might be from the black spots I just found behind our wardrobe in the master bedroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, but with the humidity lately, it seems to have gotten worse. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach or vinegar, or is it time to call one of those professional mold remediation companies in Dubai?

The black spots you've described behind the wardrobe are a classic sign of a condensation-related mold issue, extremely common in Dubai due to our high humidity levels and the constant use of air conditioning, which can create cold spots on walls behind large furniture. While small, superficial spots on a non-porous surface can sometimes be addressed with a detergent solution, I strongly advise against using bleach or vinegar. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and wood, as it only bleaches the surface mold while leaving the root structure intact, and its high water content can actually feed future growth. Vinegar can kill some species but is not a registered or reliable biocide.

Given that the mold is extensive enough to be suspected of causing respiratory symptoms in children, this is not a DIY situation. Disturbing the colony without proper containment can aerosolize spores throughout your home, significantly increasing exposure. In the UAE, professional mold remediation is governed by strict health and safety standards. A certified company, like Saniservice, will conduct a thorough inspection to identify the moisture source (e.g., a condensate drain issue, capillary action from the slab) and the species present. Remediation involves engineering controls: sealing the area, using HEPA filtration devices to clean the air, safely removing contaminated materials, and applying professional-grade antimicrobial solutions.

For the health of your family and to ensure the problem is solved at its root, I recommend a professional inspection. You can contact our experts for a consultation at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or hello@saniservice.com.
