Is this black mold in my Dubai bedroom closet?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet on the outside wall has a bunch of black fuzzy spots that I just found while putting away laundry. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, and the room has felt really damp lately even with the AC on. I'm in an older building in Bur Dubai. Is this dangerous black mold and who should I call to get it professionally tested in Dubai?

Based on your description, what you are seeing in your Bur Dubai bedroom closet has a high probability of being a mold colony. The "black fuzzy spots" are a classic visual indicator, and the persistent damp feeling you've noticed, even with the AC running, is a significant red flag. This is extremely common in older buildings in Dubai due to the high ambient humidity, which can lead to condensation on cooler external walls, especially if there is any thermal bridging or insufficient insulation.

While the term "black mold" is often used to refer to Stachybotrys chartarum, a type that can produce mycotoxins, not all black-colored mold is this specific species. However, any active mold growth indoors is a concern as it can degrade building materials and, more importantly, negatively impact indoor air quality, potentially causing allergic reactions, respiratory irritation, and other health issues for occupants. It should be addressed professionally.

We strongly advise against disturbing it yourself, as this can aerosolize spores and spread the contamination. The first step is a professional inspection and testing. A certified mold inspector will conduct a visual assessment, measure humidity levels at the wall, and take air and surface samples to be analyzed in an accredited laboratory. This identifies the species and concentration, which is critical for determining the appropriate remediation protocol.
