Mold in Dubai closet: DIY clean or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots appearing in the corner of our master bedroom closet, where we store our winter clothes. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and it definitely got worse after that last big humid spell we had a couple of weeks ago. I'm worried it's spreading to our stuff, but I'm not sure if I can just clean it with vinegar myself or if this is a sign of a bigger problem with the building. Should I call a professional mold remediation company here in Dubai, or is this a DIY job?

Based on your description, this is a situation that warrants a professional inspection and almost certainly requires professional remediation. The presence of black spots on an exterior wall that worsened after a period of high humidity is a classic indicator of a moisture intrusion issue, likely from a small leak in the building envelope or severe condensation due to the temperature differential between the air-conditioned interior and the hot, humid exterior climate of Dubai.

DIY cleaning with vinegar or bleach is strongly discouraged. These methods only address the surface discoloration you can see, not the root moisture problem or the hyphae (root system) of the mold growing within the wall cavity. This means it will inevitably return, often worse than before. Furthermore, disturbing the mold by scrubbing it can aerosolize spores, potentially spreading the contamination to other areas of your closet and bedroom, including your stored clothing.

The UAE's humid climate, especially during summer and the recent humid spells, creates a perfect breeding ground for mold when combined with any source of moisture. This is not just a cosmetic issue; it is a potential health risk and a sign of property damage.

I recommend you call a certified professional immediately. Our team at Saniservice specializes in mold inspection using moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to pinpoint the exact source of the moisture behind the wall. We then perform controlled, professional remediation following IICRC standards to contain the area, remove the contaminated materials safely, and address the moisture source to prevent recurrence. For a definitive assessment and a lasting solution, please call us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com.
