Can I remove black mold myself or hire a pro?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's because of the black spots I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed it, probably from the humidity. It's not a huge patch, maybe the size of my hand. How urgent is it that I get a professional to deal with this, or can I handle it myself with bleach this weekend?

Based on the symptoms you've described and the location of the mold, I strongly recommend a professional inspection and remediation. In the UAE's climate, especially in a humid coastal area like Jumeirah, what appears as a small patch is often just the visible tip of a larger problem. The constant use of air conditioning creates significant condensation within walls and behind furniture, which is a primary catalyst for mold growth.

While a small, surface-level mold issue can sometimes be addressed by a homeowner, several factors in your case indicate a professional is necessary. The fact that it is behind a large piece of furniture suggests a persistent moisture issue and poor air circulation. More critically, the correlation with your children's respiratory symptoms means the mold is already affecting your indoor air quality and health. Using bleach is not an effective long-term solution; it only bleaches the color on the surface and can actually release more spores and harmful fumes into the air without killing the root structure.

Our certified inspectors use moisture meters and thermal imaging to identify the exact source of the moisture and the full extent of the colonization. We then follow Dubai Municipality guidelines for safe containment and removal using professional-grade antimicrobials, not bleach, to ensure it is eradicated and not just cleaned cosmetically. For the health of your family, do not attempt this yourself.
