Is the black mold behind my bed making my child sick?« Back to Previous Page

We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed black, speckled patches forming along the bottom of the wall behind our son's bed in Al Barsha. My youngest has been coughing non-stop for a week and I'm starting to panic it's connected. Is this the dangerous black mold I keep hearing about, and who can I call in Dubai to test this properly and safely?

Based on your description from Al Barsha, the situation you've described presents several classic indicators of a mold issue that requires immediate professional attention. The black, speckled patches behind the bed, coupled with your child's persistent cough, are strongly correlated and should not be ignored.

In the UAE's climate, this is a common occurrence. Year-round air conditioning leads to significant temperature differentials between cold interior walls and the humid outdoor air, resulting in condensation—the primary catalyst for mold growth. The area behind furniture, like a bed, is a particular hotspot due to restricted airflow, allowing moisture to accumulate unseen. While the term "black mold" (often referring to Stachybotrys chartarum) is frequently sensationalized, it is critical to understand that any mold proliferation indoors is a health hazard, especially for children, the elderly, and those with respiratory sensitivities. The mycotoxins and spores released can cause symptoms exactly like your son's, including chronic coughing, wheezing, and throat irritation.

You must not attempt to clean this yourself. Disturbing the colony without proper containment protocols will aerosolize a high concentration of spores throughout your home, exacerbating the health risk. UAE regulations and best practices require that such biological contaminants be handled by certified professionals using specialized equipment like HEPA containment, negative air machines, and antimicrobial treatments.

For an accurate assessment, you need a certified mold inspection that includes air and surface sampling to identify the species and spore count levels. I strongly recommend you contact a Dubai-based specialist immediately. Saniservice provides comprehensive PCR-based mold testing and Dubai Municipality-compliant remediation protocols.
