Is this black mold in my Dubai apartment?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our apartment in Jumeirah seems to be leaking a bit of water onto the carpet in the kids' bedroom, and now I'm noticing some black, dusty spots spreading out from the corner behind the dresser. My youngest has had a persistent cough for the last two weeks that just won't go away, and I'm starting to panic it's connected. Is this definitely black mold and who do I call in Dubai to get it professionally tested and removed safely?

Based on your description of a water leak from the AC unit, the subsequent black, dusty spots on the carpet, and your child's persistent respiratory issue, there is a high probability you are dealing with a fungal growth. The combination of moisture and the organic material in the carpet pad provides an ideal environment for mold, particularly in Dubai's humid climate where AC systems are a constant source of condensation.

While the term "black mold" is often used colloquially for Stachybotrys chartarum, many molds appear black. Only professional testing can confirm the species. However, any visible mold growth and a correlating health symptom, especially in a child, should be treated with seriousness. The confined space of a bedroom with continuous exposure from the AC system can exacerbate respiratory problems like coughing.

You must address this immediately with a professional. Do not attempt to clean it yourself, as improper disturbance can aerosolize spores and significantly worsen indoor air quality and exposure. In the UAE, mold inspection and remediation are specialized fields. A certified company will conduct a thorough inspection, including air and surface sampling to identify the spore types and concentration levels, and then execute a containment and remediation plan following industry standards like IICRC.

For professional testing and safe, guaranteed removal, I strongly recommend you contact the specialists at Saniservice. They are experts in dealing with mold issues specific to Dubai's building and climate conditions.
