Is black mold dangerous, and can I clean it myself?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to be blowing out a weird, damp smell, and I’ve just found a patch of black spots in the corner behind the bedroom wardrobe. It’s been getting worse since the humidity spiked a couple of weeks ago. I’m worried it’s affecting our health as my husband has been waking up with a stuffy nose every morning. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach, or do I absolutely need to call a professional company to handle it?

Yes, black mold (often referring to Stachybotrys chartarum and other toxigenic species) is considered dangerous, particularly for immunocompromised individuals, children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions like asthma. The health effects you're describing—waking up with a stuffy nose—are classic symptoms of exposure to mold spores, which can also include throat irritation, coughing, wheezing, and skin rashes.

In the UAE's climate, this is a pervasive issue. Our year-round reliance on AC systems, combined with extreme outdoor humidity, creates ideal conditions for mold growth inside AC units and on cold surfaces where condensation forms, like behind furniture against exterior walls. The damp smell from your AC is a significant red flag indicating microbial growth within the ducting or evaporation coils.

Cleaning a small patch of surface mold (less than 1 square foot) with a detergent solution can be attempted, but I strongly advise against using bleach. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces, its fumes are hazardous, and it does not address the root moisture problem. For any larger infestation, or if the mold is in your HVAC system, a DIY approach is highly inadvisable. Disturbing the mold without proper containment and air scrubbing will aerosolize spores throughout your apartment, drastically increasing exposure.

Per Dubai Municipality guidelines, addressing the underlying cause of moisture is mandatory for effective remediation. This requires professional inspection and tools like moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to locate the source. For your situation, with systemic AC issues and health symptoms, a professional assessment is absolutely critical.

I recommend contacting our certified team at Saniservice for a comprehensive inspection. We can identify the species, assess the contamination level in your AC system, and execute a safe, compliant remediation. Call us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com.
