Can I clean AC mold with bleach or need professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been leaking a bit for the last couple of weeks, and now I’m seeing these black spots spreading on the wall behind the headboard. It smells damp all the time, even after I wipe it down. Is this something I can clean with bleach myself, or do I need to call a professional company to handle it?

Based on the symptoms you've described—persistent damp smell, visible black spots spreading from an AC leak—this is a clear case of active mold growth facilitated by the high humidity and condensation inherent to Dubai's climate. The wall cavity behind the headboard is likely saturated, creating an ideal environment for mold.

Using household bleach is strongly discouraged. It is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and plaster, as it only bleaches the surface mold without addressing the root colony. More critically, bleach is primarily water (over 90%), which can actually feed the mold deeper within the material, causing the problem to rebound worse than before. The fumes from bleach can also be hazardous in an enclosed space like a bedroom.

For a situation involving an ongoing water source (the leaking AC unit) and widespread growth, a professional inspection and remediation are absolutely necessary. UAE regulations, particularly from entities like the Dubai Municipality, emphasize proper containment and removal protocols to prevent cross-contamination and ensure occupant safety. Our certified inspectors use moisture meters and thermal imaging to assess the full extent of the water damage and hidden mold, which is crucial for a permanent solution.

The remediation process involves isolating the area, safely removing the contaminated materials, applying specialized antimicrobial agents, and most importantly, rectifying the source of the moisture—in this case, repairing the AC leak.
