Black mold behind wardrobe: DIY clean or call professional?« Back to Previous Page
|
My kids have been coughing and I suspect it’s from the black fuzzy patches I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. It’s the wall that faces the outside, and with all the humidity lately, it's spread to about the size of a dinner plate. I'm worried about their health but also don't want to call building maintenance if it's something I can just clean myself with bleach.
Is this something I can safely handle on my own or do I absolutely need to get a professional?

Based on your description, you absolutely need a professional inspection and remediation. This is not a situation for DIY cleaning with bleach.
The fuzzy black patches behind the wardrobe are a major red flag. The size (a dinner plate) indicates a significant colony, and its location on an exterior wall points to a chronic moisture issue, likely from condensation due to our high Dubai humidity interacting with the cold wall from year-round AC. This creates the perfect environment for mold. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall; it only bleaches the surface color while leaving the root structure intact, and the moisture problem will cause it to return quickly and often more aggressively. The health concerns for your children are valid. Exposure to mold spores, particularly from types like Stachybotrys (often referred to as "black mold"), can cause persistent coughing, respiratory irritation, and other allergic reactions. Disturbing it without proper containment will aerosolize these spores, spreading them throughout your bedroom and HVAC system, significantly increasing exposure. UAE regulations, particularly in Dubai, emphasize the importance of professional environmental hygiene to safeguard occupant health. A certified professional from a company like Saniservice will first conduct a thorough inspection to identify the exact species and the full extent of the moisture intrusion. We then execute a controlled remediation process involving containment, HEPA filtration, antimicrobial treatment, and most critically, identifying and rectifying the source of moisture to prevent recurrence. For the health of your family and to ensure the problem is solved permanently, I strongly recommend you call our experts for a consultation.
