How to remove and prevent mold in a bedroom closet?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet, which is on the outside wall of our villa in Mirdif, has started to get these small black speckles in the corners. We run the AC constantly, but with the recent humidity, the musty smell is really strong when I open the doors to get my clothes. What’s the most effective way to clean this and prevent it from coming back for good?

Based on your description of black speckles and a strong musty odor in your Mirdif villa closet, you are likely dealing with a mold colony, potentially of the Stachybotrys (black mold) type. This is a common issue in Dubai due to the high ambient humidity interacting with cold surfaces from constant AC use, leading to condensation on exterior walls—a prime environment for mold growth.

The most effective approach requires addressing both the visible growth and the underlying moisture source. For cleaning, do not simply wipe it. This can aerosolize harmful spores. First, isolate the area by sealing the closet. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. The mold should be carefully removed using a HEPA-filtered vacuum to capture spores, followed by scrubbing with an EPA-approved fungicidal cleaner, not bleach, as bleach fails to kill the roots on porous surfaces and can exacerbate the problem.

However, cleaning alone is a temporary fix. The core issue is the condensation on that exterior wall. To prevent recurrence, you must control the humidity. Ensure your AC unit is properly sized and serviced to effectively remove humidity from the air. Improve air circulation within the closet by leaving doors ajar periodically or installing a small battery-operated dehumidifier or moisture absorber. Inspect the exterior wall for any cracks or leaks that may be allowing moisture ingress.

For a permanent solution, especially given the health risks associated with inhaling mold spores, a professional inspection is highly recommended. We use thermal imaging cameras to pinpoint the exact location and extent of moisture intrusion and advanced air sampling to identify the spore types and concentration. Our remediation protocols follow UAE standards for safe and complete removal.
