Black bathroom grout: DIY vinegar or call Dubai professional?« Back to Previous Page

Our guest bathroom's grout has been turning black for a couple of months and there's a constant damp smell, even though we run the exhaust fan. We're in an older building in Jumeirah and I'm worried the humidity is making it worse. Is this something I can tackle myself with a vinegar solution from Lulu or should I just call a professional mold removal company in Dubai to be safe?

Based on the symptoms you've described—persistent black grout discoloration and a constant damp smell despite using an exhaust fan—this is highly indicative of active mold growth, likely Aspergillus or Stachybotrys (black mold), which is a serious concern. The high humidity levels in Dubai, particularly in older buildings in coastal areas like Jumeirah, create a perfect environment for mold to thrive behind tiles and within wall cavities. Your year-round AC use can exacerbate the issue by creating significant temperature differentials that lead to condensation within the walls, a problem a surface-level exhaust fan cannot mitigate.

A DIY approach with a vinegar solution from Lulu is not recommended. While vinegar can kill some surface mold, it is ineffective against deeply rooted fungal hyphae and will not address the underlying moisture source. More critically, scrubbing can aerosolize toxic mold spores, contaminating your entire bathroom and HVAC system, posing a significant health risk.

In the UAE, proper mold remediation is governed by strict hygiene and public health standards. A professional assessment is crucial to identify the type of mold, the extent of the infestation, and the hidden moisture source. We use tools like borescopes and moisture meters to see inside walls and behind tiles.

For a situation like this, where the mold is recurring and accompanied by a persistent odor, I strongly recommend a professional inspection and remediation. Our certified team at Saniservice is equipped with advanced containment systems and HEPA filtration to safely remove the biofilm, treat the area with EPA-approved fungicides, and identify the root cause to prevent recurrence.
