Can I remove black shower grout mold myself or need professional?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in our master bathroom shower has started turning black, especially in the corners where it's always a bit damp. I tried spraying some bleach cleaner on it a couple of times, but it just lightened it for a day and came back darker. It's our main bathroom in the JVC apartment and we use it multiple times a day.
Is this something I can tackle myself with a stronger product from ACE Hardware, or do I need to call in a professional cleaning company to stop it for good?

The black discoloration in your shower grout is almost certainly active mold growth, a very common issue in Dubai due to our high humidity levels and constant air conditioning use, which creates significant condensation and persistent dampness. What you are seeing is likely Aspergillus niger or similar species that thrive in the warm, wet environment of a bathroom.
While a DIY approach with bleach is a common first attempt, it is largely ineffective for porous materials like grout. Bleach only removes surface discoloration but does not address the fungal roots (hyphae) penetrating the material. This explains the temporary lightening and rapid, often worse, regrowth. Stronger, off-the-shelf fungicidal products from ACE Hardware may offer a slightly longer respite but are still a superficial solution if the underlying moisture issue is not resolved. For a persistent problem in a high-use bathroom, I strongly recommend a professional assessment. In the UAE, proper mold remediation is governed by strict health and safety guidelines to prevent cross-contamination and ensure complete removal. Our certified inspectors use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to identify hidden water intrusion behind tiles that is feeding the growth—a common issue in buildings with aging sealant. Attempting aggressive DIY removal can often disturb the mold, releasing a high concentration of spores into your apartment's air and exacerbating potential health risks. For a definitive solution, the affected grout often needs to be professionally removed and replaced, followed by the application of a specialized, long-lasting antimicrobial sealant to prevent recurrence. Given your location in JVC and the description of the issue, a professional inspection is the most prudent course of action.
