Is this black mold making my son sick?« Back to Previous Page
|
Our family villa in Al Barsha has this weird black stuff growing along the bottom of the wall in my son's bedroom where his bed is pushed up against it. We only noticed it after the heavy rains a couple of weeks ago, and now my youngest has developed a persistent cough that won't go away. I’m really worried it’s black mold and that it’s making him sick. What is the safest and most effective way to clean this ourselves, or should I just call a professional company immediately?

Based on your description of the black growth appearing after the recent heavy rains and its proximity to your son's bed, there is a high probability you are dealing with Stachybotrys chartarum, commonly known as toxic black mold. The timing of your son's persistent cough is a significant indicator, as exposure to mycotoxins released by this mold can cause respiratory irritation, chronic coughing, and other allergic reactions, particularly in children.
The climate in Dubai, especially following rain, creates a perfect storm for mold growth. High humidity and condensation, often exacerbated by air conditioning systems that may not be draining properly, lead to moisture accumulation within wall cavities. The wall behind the bed is a classic problem area, as furniture restricts airflow, trapping humidity and allowing mold to flourish unseen. Attempting to clean this yourself is not advisable. Disturbing the mold without proper containment can aerosolize the toxic spores, significantly increasing the concentration in the air your family breathes and spreading the contamination to other parts of the villa. Furthermore, surface cleaning is ineffective if the moisture source within the wall is not identified and rectified, guaranteeing the mold will return. For a situation involving suspected toxic black mold and a correlated health issue, a professional inspection and remediation are absolutely essential. Our certified inspectors use moisture meters, thermal imaging, and air quality tests to identify the exact extent of the infestation and the root cause of the moisture. The remediation process then involves advanced containment procedures, HEPA filtration, and antimicrobial treatments to safely remove the hazard and prevent recurrence, in full compliance with UAE environmental and health standards. Do not delay. For the health of your family, I strongly recommend you contact our team for an immediate assessment.
