Black mold behind wardrobe: clean myself or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a few black speckled patches behind our bedroom wardrobe. It's on the wall and the weather has been so humid lately that the room just feels damp all the time. My youngest has started sneezing a lot in the mornings and I'm worried it's connected. Is this something I can safely clean myself with vinegar or a bleach solution, or do I need to call a professional mold remediation company here in Dubai?

Based on your description, this is a scenario we frequently encounter in Dubai, and I strongly advise against a DIY cleaning attempt. The presence of black, speckled patches, a persistent damp feeling, and especially the correlation with your child's allergic symptoms are significant red flags.

The high humidity and constant use of air conditioning in Dubai create a perfect environment for mold growth, particularly in concealed, poorly ventilated areas like behind furniture. The species commonly referred to as "black mold" (Stachybotrys chartarum) can produce mycotoxins that are linked to respiratory issues, persistent coughing, and allergic reactions, particularly in children and immunocompromised individuals. Your child's morning sneezing is a classic symptom of exposure to mold spores circulating in the bedroom's air.

Using vinegar or bleach is a surface-level solution that often fails to address the root cause—the moisture problem within the wall itself. These methods can also agitate the colony, causing a sudden release of spores and mycotoxins into your living space, potentially worsening the health situation. Furthermore, improper remediation can violate Dubai Municipality's public health and housing standards, which mandate that dampness and fungal growth be properly eliminated to ensure a safe indoor environment.

For a case like this, a professional inspection is non-negotiable. Our certified inspectors use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to detect the precise source of moisture and borescopes to assess the extent of growth within the wall cavity. This technical assessment is crucial for an effective remediation plan.
