Can I clean black mold myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for a couple of weeks and I’m starting to suspect the black spots I just found behind our wardrobe in the master bedroom. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed it after moving the furniture. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach, or do I need to call a professional mold inspection company to check the walls properly?

It is not advisable to clean visible black mold growth yourself, especially given the health symptoms your children are exhibiting. While surface cleaning with a bleach solution is a common DIY approach, it is often ineffective and can be hazardous. Bleach only removes the surface pigmentation but does not address the root cause—the moisture problem—or kill the hyphal roots (mycelium) penetrating porous materials like drywall and concrete. Disturbing the mold without proper containment can aerosolize harmful spores and mycotoxins, significantly worsening indoor air quality and potentially exacerbating respiratory issues like the coughing you've described.

In the UAE's climate, mold is a persistent issue. Year-round air conditioning leads to significant temperature differentials, causing condensation within wall cavities, especially behind large furniture like wardrobes that restrict airflow. This creates the perfect microenvironment for mold proliferation. The black spots you see are likely just the tip of the iceberg; the hidden damage within the wall could be extensive.

A professional inspection is strongly recommended. Our certified mold inspectors use specialized equipment such as borescopes to look inside walls, moisture meters to identify the exact source of water intrusion, and air quality pumps to test for spore concentration levels. This comprehensive diagnosis is crucial, as per UAE health and safety guidelines for indoor environments, to develop an effective remediation plan.
