Should I remove black mold myself or hire a pro?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing a lot lately and I’m worried it’s from black mold I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. It's a pretty big patch, about the size of a dinner plate, and it’s on the wall that faces the outside. We’ve been running the AC constantly since summer started and I think the humidity made it worse. Should I try to clean this myself with bleach or is this a job for a professional cleaning company in Dubai?

Based on the details you've provided, this is a situation that absolutely requires professional intervention and you should not attempt to clean it yourself. The patch's size (a dinner plate) indicates a significant growth, and its location on an exterior wall strongly suggests a condensation issue, which is extremely common in Dubai due to the high humidity and constant AC use creating a thermal bridge. This often means the mold growth within the wall cavity is far more extensive than what is visible on the surface.

Cleaning it with bleach is highly inadvisable. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall, as it only removes the surface discoloration while leaving the root structure intact. More critically, improper cleaning disturbs the mold, releasing a massive amount of microscopic spores and mycotoxins into your air, which can drastically worsen your family's respiratory symptoms, including the coughing you've described.

In the UAE, professional mold remediation, like the services we provide at Saniservice, follows strict IICRC guidelines. The process involves containment of the area with negative air pressure to prevent cross-contamination, safe removal of affected porous materials, HEPA vacuuming, and antimicrobial treatment of the cavity. Crucially, we will also identify and rectify the underlying moisture source—whether it's condensation from AC ducts, a leak, or inadequate insulation—to prevent immediate recurrence.

Given your children's health symptoms and the scale of the problem, a professional inspection and remediation are necessary for your family's safety. I recommend you call our experts at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for an immediate assessment.
