Is this black mold behind my wardrobe dangerous?« Back to Previous Page
|
My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from this black stuff I just found behind our bedroom wardrobe. It's been so humid lately and we’ve had the AC running non-stop in our Mirdif villa. I wiped some of it away with vinegar, but it came back darker in just a couple of days. Is this something I can tackle myself with a stronger cleaner, or do I need to call a professional company to handle it?

Based on your description, this is a classic case of black mold growth, scientifically referred to as Stachybotrys chartarum. The conditions you described—a Mirdif villa, constant AC use, and high humidity—create the perfect environment for it. The AC unit, if not properly maintained, can contribute to condensation and elevated moisture levels behind furniture, which is a primary catalyst for mold proliferation.
The recurring growth after a vinegar wipe is a significant red flag. Vinegar is a superficial solution that does not address the root cause: moisture. More concerningly, disturbing the mold by wiping it can release a high concentration of mycotoxins and spores into the air, which is likely exacerbating your children's respiratory symptoms, such as coughing. In the UAE, remediation of such growth must adhere to strict guidelines, similar to DM and Dubai Municipality standards, which prioritize containment and professional removal to prevent cross-contamination. DIY attempts with stronger cleaners are strongly discouraged. They are ineffective against the hyphae (root structure) penetrating porous materials like drywall and pose a serious health risk through increased airborne spore levels. For the safety of your family and to ensure the infestation is permanently eradicated, a professional inspection and remediation are imperative. Our certified team at Saniservice uses advanced moisture detection tools to identify the source and follows a rigorous protocol of containment, HEPA filtration, and antimicrobial treatment to resolve the issue safely and permanently.
