Can I clean closet mold myself or need a pro?« Back to Previous Page

My master bedroom closet on the outside wall has a bunch of black fuzzy spots on the back, and all our clothes stored there smell damp. It’s gotten worse since the humidity kicked in last month. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach from the supermarket, or do I need to call one of those professional mold remediation companies?

Based on your description of black fuzzy spots on an exterior wall and a persistent damp smell, you are likely dealing with a significant mold colony. In Dubai's climate, exterior walls are prone to condensation due to the extreme temperature differential between the air-conditioned interior and the hot, humid exterior air. This creates a perfect environment for mold growth within wall cavities.

Cleaning the surface with supermarket bleach is a common but ineffective and potentially hazardous DIY approach. Bleach does not kill mold on porous surfaces like drywall or wood; it only bleaches the visible color, allowing the root structure to regrow. More critically, it introduces excessive moisture and harmful chlorine fumes into your indoor environment, which can aggravate respiratory issues.

For a closet of this nature, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. The visible spots are often just the tip of the iceberg, indicating a larger moisture problem and potential colonization inside the wall. Our certified inspectors use thermal imaging cameras to identify hidden moisture sources and air quality tests to determine spore concentration and species, which is crucial for devising a safe remediation plan, especially for toxic molds like Stachybotrys.

Attempting self-removal without proper containment, industrial-grade HEPA filtration, and antimicrobial agents can inadvertently trigger a massive release of spores, contaminating your entire bedroom and HVAC system. For a confirmed, safe resolution and to prevent recurrence, the affected building materials often need to be removed and the area treated by professionals.
