What's the best local product to kill shower mold?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black, speckled mold growing in the grout between the tiles in our master bathroom shower. It's the bathroom without a window, and it seems worse in the corners where the shower door meets the wall. I try to wipe the walls down after showers, but the humidity here is just relentless. What’s the most effective product I can find locally to kill this for good, and should I be worried about it affecting the air conditioning in the rest of the apartment?

The black speckled mold you're describing in your shower grout is a very common issue in Dubai, particularly in windowless bathrooms where high ambient humidity and condensation from hot showers create a persistent damp environment. This is almost certainly a surface mold, commonly Cladosporium or Aspergillus, feeding on organic residues in the porous grout.

For a localized, surface-level issue, the most effective and locally available professional-grade biocide is HG Mould Spray. It is widely stocked in Ace Hardware and other home improvement stores. It contains powerful quaternary ammonium compounds specifically formulated to kill mold spores at the root and inhibit regrowth. For application, thoroughly saturate the affected grout lines, allow the product to dwell for the recommended time (usually 10-15 minutes), then scrub with a stiff brush. It is crucial that you wear nitrile gloves and ensure the room is well-ventilated during this process.

However, your concern about the air conditioning is valid. In the UAE's climate, where AC systems recirculate air constantly, mold spores from the bathroom can easily become aerosolized and enter the ductwork. This can contaminate the entire system, leading to musty odors and potential health issues. Surface cleaning will not address this risk.

Given the recurring nature of the problem and the potential for hidden contamination in the wall cavity or AC system, a professional assessment is strongly advised. Our certified inspectors at Saniservice use borescopes to check behind tiles and conduct air quality tests to determine spore count levels in your bedroom and living areas. We can identify if this is a simple surface issue or a more systemic problem requiring remediation.
