Could black mold in our villa be causing my kids' cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop since we got back from summer vacation, and I’ve just spotted a patch of black mold in the corner of their bedroom closet where we store their winter clothes. Our villa in Jumeirah Park has felt really humid lately, even with the AC running. Could this mold be the cause of their allergies, and how do I find a reputable company to do a proper inspection and tell me how bad it really is?

Based on your description, it is highly probable that the black mold (likely Stachybotrys chartarum or another toxigenic species) is a significant contributor to your children's persistent cough. In the UAE's climate, particularly in sealed villas with continuous AC operation, conditions are ideal for mold proliferation. The AC, while cooling, often does not adequately control humidity, leading to condensation in cold spots like closet corners and behind furniture. This creates a micro-environment with >60% relative humidity, which is the primary catalyst for mold growth on organic materials such as cotton, leather, and paper—common in stored winter clothing.

The mycotoxins and microbial volatile organic compounds (MVOCs) released by actively growing mold colonies are potent respiratory irritants and allergens. Children are especially susceptible due to their developing immune systems and higher respiratory rates. The non-stop coughing is a classic symptom of exposure.

Given the visible growth and associated health symptoms, this is a serious case requiring immediate professional assessment. A reputable company will not just perform a visual inspection but will conduct comprehensive air quality testing, including spore trap sampling to quantify the concentration of airborne spores in the children's bedroom versus the outdoor air. They will also use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to identify the exact source of the moisture intrusion, which is critical for an effective remediation plan.

For a certified inspection and detailed report in line with Dubai Municipality's public health and safety guidelines, I strongly recommend contacting our specialists at Saniservice. Call 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule a thorough investigation. Do not attempt to disturb the mold yourself, as this can aerosolize the spores and significantly worsen the contamination and your family's exposure.
