Black mold behind wardrobe causing cough: DIY or professional?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for the last couple of weeks, and I just discovered a bunch of black spots behind our wardrobe in the master bedroom. We’re in an older building in Deira and the room doesn’t get much sun. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach from the supermarket, or do I need to call one of those professional mold removal companies?

Based on your description, this is a situation that warrants a professional inspection. The combination of persistent coughing in children and visible black mold growth in a poorly ventilated, low-sunlight area of an older Deira building indicates a potentially serious indoor air quality issue.

While supermarket bleach is a common DIY suggestion, it is a superficial and often ineffective solution in the UAE's climate. The high humidity and constant air conditioning use create ideal conditions for mold, particularly in hidden spaces like behind furniture where condensation forms on cooler walls. Bleach only removes surface discoloration on non-porous materials; it does not kill the root hyphae penetrating porous building materials like drywall or concrete, and it does not address the airborne spores that are likely causing the respiratory symptoms. Furthermore, improper handling can aerosolize these spores, worsening the contamination.

According to UAE health and safety guidelines, extensive visible growth and the presence of health symptoms are key indicators for professional remediation. Our process involves a thorough inspection, including moisture mapping and air quality testing to identify the species and spore count. Remediation then focuses on the source: correcting the moisture intrusion, containing the area to prevent cross-contamination, safely removing affected materials, and using HEPA filtration to clean the air. Applying a preventative antimicrobial coating is the final, critical step.
