Is this black mold dangerous for my toddler?« Back to Previous Page

My toddler and I have both had this persistent cough and itchy eyes for about a month now, and I just pulled out the guest room wardrobe to find a huge patch of black, fuzzy mold on the back wall. We live in an older building in Deira and I'm terrified this is the cause. How dangerous is this type of mold and should I take my son to the doctor immediately?

Based on your description, the situation you have described is a serious environmental health concern that requires immediate action. The term "black mold" is often used to refer to Stachybotrys chartarum, a toxigenic mold species that produces mycotoxins. For a toddler with a developing respiratory system, exposure to these spores can be particularly dangerous, manifesting in the exact symptoms you describe: persistent cough, respiratory irritation, and itchy eyes.

The climate in Dubai is a significant contributing factor. High humidity levels, especially in older buildings in areas like Deira, combined with year-round air conditioning, create massive condensation issues behind furniture and within wall cavities. This trapped moisture is the perfect breeding ground for severe mold infestations.

You should absolutely consult a pediatrician immediately to address your son's symptoms. Concurrently, you must address the source. Do not attempt to clean this yourself. Disturbing the mold will aerosolize a massive number of spores, drastically increasing your exposure. UAE regulations, particularly Dubai Municipality's public health and safety codes, mandate that such contamination be handled by licensed professionals using controlled containment, negative air pressure, and specialized PPE.

This is not a surface cleaning issue; it requires expert remediation. I strongly recommend you contact a certified professional inspection and remediation company like Saniservice. They can conduct a thorough assessment, identify the moisture source, and execute a safe, complete remediation following the highest industry standards. Please call them at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for an urgent consultation. Your family's health is the priority.
