Is black mold causing my kids' cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing a lot lately and I suspect it's the black mold I just found behind our bedroom wardrobe. We've lived in this Jumeirah Park villa for 2 years and just noticed it, probably from the humidity. The patch is about the size of a dinner plate and feels damp. Is this something I can tackle myself with vinegar or bleach, or do I absolutely need to call a professional company to handle it?

The persistent cough in your children is a significant health concern that strongly correlates with the black mold (likely Stachybotrys chartarum) you've discovered. Given the UAE's high humidity levels, especially during summer, and the year-round reliance on AC which can create condensation pockets, mold growth behind furniture is a common issue in Dubai villas. A patch the size of a dinner plate indicates an established colony, and the dampness confirms an active moisture source.

While DIY methods like vinegar or bleach are often suggested, they are insufficient and potentially hazardous. Bleach can irritate the airways further and only bleaches the surface without addressing the root cause or the hyphal roots within the building material. For a colony of this size and given the associated health symptoms, professional intervention is not just recommended but essential.

The remediation process requires more than cleaning; it involves identifying and rectifying the moisture source (often a minor leak or condensation from AC ducts), containing the area to prevent spore dissemination throughout your home, and using industrial-grade HEPA filtration and EPA-approved antimicrobials to safely remove the biomass.

I strongly advise against handling this yourself. For the health of your family and to ensure the infestation is completely eradicated, you need a certified mold inspection and remediation service.
