Is AC vent mold causing our constant cough and headaches?« Back to Previous Page

The AC vent in our Jumeirah Village Circle apartment has been leaking a bit of water for a couple of months, and now I'm seeing black, fuzzy patches around it. My husband has had a constant stuffy nose and a cough that just won't go away, and I'm starting to get headaches. Is this black mold, and could it be the reason we're feeling so sick, or is it just a coincidence?

Based on your description of a leaking AC vent and the appearance of black, fuzzy patches, there is a very high probability that you are dealing with a mold infestation, likely including Stachybotrys chartarum (commonly referred to as black mold) or other toxigenic species like Aspergillus. The climate in Dubai, characterized by extreme heat and high humidity, creates a perfect environment for mold growth within AC systems, where condensation provides a constant moisture source.

Your symptoms are not a coincidence. The constant cough, stuffy nose, and headaches are classic indicators of mold exposure. As the AC operates, it aerosolizes the mold spores and mycotoxins from the contaminated vent and distributes them throughout your living space, leading to persistent respiratory irritation and other health effects. This is a serious indoor air quality issue that requires immediate attention.

For your safety, I strongly recommend you cease using that AC unit until it can be inspected and remediated. Do not attempt to clean it yourself, as improper handling can cause a massive release of spores.

This situation necessitates a professional assessment. In the UAE, mold remediation companies like ours follow strict protocols to ensure safe and complete removal. Our certified inspectors will conduct air and surface sampling to identify the mold species and the extent of contamination, which is crucial for determining the correct remediation strategy.

For a comprehensive inspection and a certified remediation plan, please contact our experts. Call Saniservice at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule a visit. Addressing the source of the moisture in the AC unit is equally critical to prevent recurrence.
