How to remove and prevent black bathroom mold in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in our master bathroom shower has started turning black, and I just noticed the same thing along the bottom of the wall where it meets the floor. It’s been incredibly humid in Dubai this last month and the bathroom doesn't have a window. What's the best way to clean this off myself, and how can I stop it from coming back for good?

The black discoloration you're observing in your shower grout and along the baseboards is almost certainly Aspergillus niger, a common mold in the UAE's high-humidity climate. This is a direct result of the extreme ambient humidity combined with condensation from showering and a lack of ventilation, creating a persistent damp environment where mold thrives.

For a DIY cleaning attempt on a small, superficial area, first ensure personal protection with an N95 mask and gloves. Do not use bleach, as it only bleaches the pigment and does not kill the root structure. Instead, use a dedicated, acid-based grout cleaner or create a paste from baking soda and distilled white vinegar. Scrub vigorously with a stiff brush. This may remove the visible growth but is often a temporary solution.

To prevent recurrence, you must address the moisture source. Run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower. Wipe down wet tiles and glass surfaces with a squeegee. Consider installing a higher-capacity exhaust fan if the current one is inadequate. For a windowless bathroom like yours, a dehumidifier can be crucial.

However, the appearance of mold at the wall-floor junction is a significant red flag. This suggests moisture may be wicking up behind the tiles or within the wall cavity itself, a condition that DIY cleaning cannot remediate. This requires professional assessment.

For a definitive solution, I recommend a professional inspection. Our certified experts at Saniservice use thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters to identify hidden moisture sources and conduct air and surface sampling to determine the spore count and species. We follow Dubai Municipality guidelines for remediation to ensure the problem is solved permanently, not just cosmetically covered.
