Can I remove bathtub mold myself or need a professional?« Back to Previous Page

Our main bathroom in the JVC apartment doesn’t get much sunlight and the smell has been getting worse since the weather turned more humid a few weeks ago. I just pulled back the silicone sealant around the bathtub and found a bunch of black and greenish mold growing underneath it. Given the humidity here, is this something I can tackle myself with a bleach spray or is this a sign of a bigger problem that needs a professional?

Based on the symptoms you've described—a persistent musty odor exacerbated by high humidity and visible black/green mold growth hidden beneath silicone sealant—this is a strong indicator of a significant moisture issue that likely requires professional assessment and remediation.
The climate in Dubai, characterized by extreme humidity and year-round AC use, creates a perfect environment for mold to thrive, especially in low-sunlight, high-moisture areas like bathrooms. The fact that the mold is growing beneath the sealant is a critical detail. This suggests the moisture problem is not just surface-level condensation but potentially a leak in the plumbing or a failure in the waterproofing membrane behind the tiles. A DIY bleach spray will only remove surface discoloration on visible areas and is ineffective at addressing the root cause of the moisture or the colony growing out of sight. More importantly, bleaching can aggravate the problem by adding moisture and may release a high concentration of spores into the air upon disturbance. For a situation like this, a professional inspection is strongly advised. Our certified inspectors use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to pinpoint the exact source of the moisture intrusion without destructive investigation. Remediation then involves the proper containment of the area, safe removal of contaminated materials like the silicone, application of EPA-approved fungicides, and resolving the underlying moisture issue to prevent recurrence, all in compliance with Dubai Municipality's health and safety standards.
