Can I clean black AC dust myself or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to have black dust blowing out of the vent in the master bedroom, and my throat has been feeling scratchy in the mornings. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it when I changed the filter last weekend. Is this something I can clean myself with a bleach spray or do I need to call a professional AC cleaning service?

Based on my professional experience in mold inspection and remediation in the UAE, the black dust you describe is almost certainly microbial growth, commonly referred to as "black mold," thriving within your AC ductwork. The combination of Dubai's intense humidity and the constant condensation within AC units creates an ideal breeding ground for mold. A scratchy throat is a classic symptom of exposure to mold spores.

Using a bleach spray is strongly discouraged. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like ductwork, and its high moisture content can actually feed further microbial growth after it evaporates. More critically, attempting to clean the vents yourself will inevitably aerosolize a high concentration of spores, contaminating your entire living space and significantly increasing your exposure, potentially leading to more severe health reactions.

This is not a job for a standard AC cleaning service. They lack the specialized equipment and protocols for safe microbial remediation. Proper remediation requires containment of the affected area, use of HEPA-filtered negative air machines to prevent cross-contamination, and professional-grade biocides approved for HVAC systems.

Given the health symptoms and visible contamination, a professional inspection is mandatory. Our certified inspectors at Saniservice use borescopes to visually inspect the interior of your ductwork and may recommend air or surface sampling to identify the specific mold species and the extent of the contamination. This evidence-based approach is crucial for implementing an effective remediation strategy.

For your health and safety, I recommend you cease using the affected AC unit and contact us for a comprehensive assessment. Call 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule an inspection.
