Is black mold in my closet an urgent problem?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet on the outside wall has developed a few small patches of black mold after all the humidity we had last month. I only just noticed it when I was putting away winter clothes, and now my throat feels a bit scratchy when I'm in that room. How urgent is it that I get a professional to deal with this, or can I handle it myself with bleach?

Based on your description, this is an issue that requires prompt professional attention and is not suitable for a DIY bleach solution. The appearance of black mold (which is a colloquial term for several species, including potentially toxigenic types like Stachybotrys) coupled with a physical symptom like a scratchy throat indicates an active fungal colony releasing spores and mycotoxins into your bedroom's air. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and wood, as it only bleaches the surface mold while leaving the root structure intact, leading to rapid regrowth. More critically, it can exacerbate the problem by releasing a large volume of harmful chemicals and spores during cleaning.

In Dubai's climate, this is a common but serious problem. Our high humidity, especially during summer and the recent humid period you mentioned, combined with year-round AC use, creates perfect conditions for condensation on cold exterior walls. Your closet on an outside wall is a classic hotspot for this condensation, providing the moisture mold needs to thrive.

We strongly recommend against disturbing it yourself. A professional inspection is urgent to identify the exact species (through air and surface sampling), determine the moisture source (often a leaking pipe, condensation, or ingress from the external wall), and assess the extent of the contamination hidden within the wall cavity. Remediation must follow strict protocols for containment and air scrubbing to prevent cross-contamination throughout your home.
