How to safely remove mold from closet in humid weather?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it’s from the mold that’s started growing on the back of our bedroom closet in Jumeirah. It’s been getting worse since the humidity really kicked in a few weeks ago, and now I'm getting a scratchy throat myself. What’s the best way to deal with this safely for our health, and should I get a professional to test it?

The mold growth on your closet is a significant health concern, especially given the symptoms you and your children are experiencing. In Dubai's climate, where high humidity and constant air conditioning create ideal conditions for mold, this is a common but serious issue. The coughing and scratchy throat are classic indicators of exposure to mold spores and mycotoxins.

Safely addressing this requires a methodical approach. First, do not attempt to clean it with bleach or simple detergents. This can agitate the colony, causing a massive release of spores into the air, potentially worsening your symptoms and contaminating other areas of the home. For a small, isolated patch (less than 1 square foot), you may carefully use a vinegar solution or a specialized EPA-approved fungicide, wearing an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. However, given its location on a porous surface like wood or drywall and the fact it's inside a closet (indicating potential hidden growth behind or beneath it), professional assessment is strongly advised.

The humid weather means the underlying moisture problem is ongoing. Simply wiping the visible growth will result in immediate recurrence. A professional inspection, like those we provide at Saniservice, is crucial. Our certified inspectors use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to identify the exact source of the moisture—whether it's condensation from the AC unit, a leak, or poor ventilation. We then conduct air and surface sampling to identify the mold species and spore count, which is vital for understanding the health risk and planning the correct remediation protocol, all performed in accordance with Dubai Municipality's health and safety guidelines.

For your family's health, I recommend ceasing use of the room until it is assessed. Please contact us for a comprehensive inspection and remediation plan. Call 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule a visit. Our team will ensure the mold is removed safely and the moisture issue is resolved to prevent it from returning.
