Safely removing mold in villa with kids present?« Back to Previous Page

Our family villa in Jumeirah has a storage room downstairs that I think got damp during the humid spell a few weeks back. I was grabbing some old suitcases yesterday and found a whole corner of the wall behind them covered in black spots, and now my youngest has been wheezing a bit. What is the safest and most effective way to get rid of this mold without putting my kids at risk from harsh chemicals?

Based on your description, this is a situation that requires immediate and professional attention. The presence of black spots and the onset of wheezing in a child are strong indicators of an active mold colony that is releasing spores and mycotoxins into your indoor air. In the Dubai climate, where high humidity and constant AC use can create ideal conditions for mold growth in enclosed, poorly ventilated spaces like storage rooms, do-it-yourself removal is highly inadvisable, especially with children present.

Attempting to clean it yourself with store-bought chemicals or bleach is not only ineffective at addressing the root cause but can be dangerously counterproductive. Agitating the mold will cause a massive release of spores, significantly increasing the inhalation risk for your family. Harsh chemicals can also create toxic fumes in an enclosed space, posing a separate health hazard.

The only safe and effective protocol is to first have a certified professional inspection. This involves moisture mapping to find the water source (which could be condensation from AC ducts, a minor leak, or residual dampness) and air/o-surface sampling to identify the mold species and spore count. This scientific analysis is critical for determining the correct remediation strategy.

For a confirmed infestation, the remediation process we employ at Saniservice is a controlled, multi-stage process. It involves isolating the contaminated area with physical barriers and negative air pressure machines (air scrubbers with HEPA filtration) to prevent cross-contamination. The mold is then carefully removed, and all affected materials are disposed of according to Dubai Municipality guidelines. The area is then treated with professional-grade, non-toxic antimicrobial solutions and thoroughly dried. Finally, post-remediation verification testing is conducted to ensure the environment is safe.

To protect your family's health, I strongly recommend against disturbing the area and to seek a professional assessment immediately. Please call our experts at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule an inspection.
