Can I clean damp black mold myself with bleach?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from this black fuzzy patch I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, probably because we never move the heavy furniture. The wall feels a bit damp to the touch. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach or do I need to call a professional company to deal with it?

The short answer is no, you should not attempt to clean that black mold yourself with bleach. What you're describing—a damp wall behind heavy furniture, especially in a bedroom—is a classic scenario for a significant mold issue here in Dubai. The persistent high humidity and constant air conditioning create massive condensation problems, particularly on exterior walls and behind large furniture that blocks airflow.

Bleach is ineffective and even counterproductive. It only bleaches the visible pigment on the surface but does not kill the root structure (hyphae) penetrating the wall. The water content in bleach can also feed the mold, causing it to regrow worse than before. More critically, improper cleaning will aerosolize the toxic spores, significantly increasing your family's exposure, which is likely the cause of your children's coughing.

Given the health symptoms and the dampness you've felt, this indicates an ongoing moisture problem that must be professionally diagnosed and resolved. We must identify the source—whether it's condensation, a hidden pipe leak, or capillary rising damp—before any remediation can begin.

For the safety of your family, I strongly recommend a professional inspection and air quality test. Our certified team at Saniservice uses moisture meters, thermal imaging, and specialized air pumps to assess the full extent of the contamination and the spore count in your bedroom's air. Do not disturb the area. Please call us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for an immediate assessment.
