Is my black mold causing sinus headaches?« Back to Previous Page

Our building in Jumeirah had some water leakage issues after that heavy rain a couple of weeks ago. Since then, I've started getting these terrible sinus headaches and a constant stuffy nose, and I've noticed what looks like black speckles spreading in the corner of my bedroom closet. Could this mold be the cause of my symptoms, and what's the first thing I should do to deal with it properly?

Based on your description of water leakage following the heavy rain and the subsequent appearance of black speckles in your closet, it is highly probable that you are dealing with a mold infestation, and it is a very likely cause of your sinus headaches and congestion. The combination of a confirmed moisture source and the onset of respiratory symptoms shortly after is a strong indicator.

The humid climate in Dubai, especially after rain events, creates a perfect environment for mold growth. When water intrusion occurs, spores already present in the air colonize the damp building materials, such as drywall or wood in your closet. The black speckles are likely the visible fruiting bodies of the colony. As mold grows, it releases microscopic spores and microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) into the air. Inhaling these particles is a known irritant and trigger for allergic reactions, including the exact sinus symptoms you are describing.

The first thing you should do is avoid disturbing the area. Do not attempt to clean it with bleach or wipe it, as this can aerosolize a high concentration of spores, worsening your symptoms and contaminating other areas. Your priority is to control the humidity; ensure the leak is fully repaired and use a dehumidifier in the room to dry the environment.

For a situation like this, especially with health symptoms already present, a professional inspection is absolutely recommended. DIY methods are insufficient and can be hazardous. Our certified inspectors at Saniservice use thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters to identify the full extent of the water damage and hidden mold growth that isn't visible. We then provide a detailed remediation protocol following industry best practices to ensure the mold is safely and completely removed, protecting your health and your property.
