How to safely clean mold and prevent it with a dehumidifier?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual and I just found a bunch of black spots behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom in Mirdif. We’ve lived here for two years and this is the first time we've seen it, probably made worse by the recent humidity. What's the best way to clean this safely and what kind of dehumidifier should I get to stop it from coming back?

The black spots you've described are likely a surface mold colony, a common issue in Mirdif and across Dubai due to our high humidity levels and the year-round reliance on air conditioning, which can create significant condensation issues. This is a serious health concern, especially with children present, as their respiratory systems are more vulnerable to mold spores.

For safe cleaning, do not attempt to simply wipe it away. Disturbing the colony will aerosolize spores, potentially worsening the coughing. For a small, surface-level area (less than 1 square meter), you may carefully clean it wearing an N95 mask, nitrile gloves, and eye protection. Use a solution of detergent and water, or a specialized mold cleaner, scrubbing the area. Do not use bleach, as it does not kill the root structure on porous surfaces and can release harmful fumes. However, given its location behind a wardrobe—an area with likely poor air circulation and potential for hidden growth—this situation strongly warrants a professional inspection. The mold you see is often just the tip of the iceberg.

To prevent recurrence, controlling indoor humidity is critical. The UAE's climate requires a robust dehumidifier. You should look for a compressor-based model with a capacity rated for your bedroom's square footage, ideally with an automatic humidistat to maintain relative humidity between 45% and 55%. Ensure it has a continuous drainage option to avoid manually emptying the tank constantly.

For a definitive assessment and safe, certified remediation that complies with Dubai Municipality's health and safety standards, I recommend a certified mold inspection. Our team at Saniservice can conduct comprehensive air and surface sampling to identify the species and extent of the problem, ensuring it is removed safely and permanently.
