Black mold in closet: health risk and how to remove safely?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of fuzzy black spots growing on the back wall of our master bedroom closet, right where it meets the outside wall. I think it might have started after we had that really humid spell a few weeks ago. I’m worried about my kids’ health, especially since my youngest has asthma. What’s the best way to get rid of it safely, and is this something I should notify my building management about in Dubai, or handle myself?

Based on your description, the patch of fuzzy black spots on the exterior wall of your closet is a significant concern. In Dubai's climate, where high humidity levels are often countered by continuous air conditioning, this creates a prime environment for condensation and mold growth, particularly on cold exterior walls. This is a common issue we encounter.

The health risks are real, especially for a child with asthma. Exposure to mold spores can exacerbate respiratory conditions, leading to increased wheezing, coughing, and allergic reactions. It is crucial not to disturb the patch, as this will release a high concentration of spores into your bedroom's air.

For a small, isolated patch (less than one square meter), you may carefully clean it with a solution of detergent and water, wearing an N95 mask and gloves. However, given its location on an exterior wall, this indicates a potential moisture intrusion issue that simple cleaning will not solve. The root cause could be a leaking pipe within the wall, a crack in the building envelope, or insufficient insulation leading to condensation.

Under Dubai regulations, the structural integrity and waterproofing of the building are the responsibility of the building management. You should absolutely notify them immediately. They are obligated to investigate the source of the moisture to prevent recurrence.

For a situation involving health risks and potential hidden moisture, we strongly recommend a professional inspection. Our certified experts at Saniservice can conduct a comprehensive assessment using moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to pinpoint the exact moisture source, assess the extent of the growth (which is often more widespread than visible), and provide a safe, compliant remediation plan. Do not risk your family's health. For a definitive solution, call us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for a consultation.
