How to treat and prevent black mold on exterior wall?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a few black spots forming on the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe in Jumeirah Park. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and with the humidity lately, I'm worried it's getting worse. What's the best way to treat this small area and prevent it from spreading further without having to call in a professional team right away?

Based on your description of the black spots on an exterior wall in Jumeirah Park, you are likely dealing with surface mold growth, a common issue in Dubai due to the high humidity and temperature differentials between air-conditioned interiors and the hot exterior environment. This often leads to condensation, particularly on cold bridges like external walls, providing the perfect environment for mold.

For a small, localized area, you can attempt to treat it yourself. First, move the wardrobe to fully expose the area. Wear an N95 mask and gloves for protection. Clean the affected surface with a solution of detergent and water, scrubbing gently. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the color and does not address the underlying moisture or spores. After cleaning, thoroughly dry the area. A dehumidifier or increased AC ventilation will significantly aid this process. Once completely dry, you can apply a preventative anti-microbial spray, readily available at hardware stores.

However, it is critical to understand that this only addresses the visible growth. The underlying cause is excess moisture. Given the wall's location, the issue could be due to insufficient insulation, a minor leak, or persistent condensation. Without identifying and rectifying this moisture source, the mold will almost certainly return.

For a lasting solution and to ensure the problem isn't more extensive (e.g., within the wall cavity), a professional inspection is strongly recommended. Our certified teams use thermal imaging cameras to identify hidden moisture and cold spots that are invisible to the naked eye. This allows us to pinpoint the exact cause and recommend targeted repairs, in line with UAE building standards.
