Is black AC mold an emergency for my toddler?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has been blowing out a weird, damp smell for the last two weeks. I just pulled the filter out and the back of the unit and the wall around it are covered in fuzzy black spots. I'm worried because my toddler has been sniffling non-stop. How quickly do I need to get a professional to deal with this, is it a total emergency?

Based on your description, this situation should be treated with a high degree of urgency. The fuzzy black spots are highly indicative of active mold growth, a significant concern in Dubai's climate where year-round AC use and high humidity create ideal conditions for proliferation within HVAC systems.

The damp smell and visible colonization at the air intake and filter mean that every time the AC operates, it is actively aerosolizing mold spores and microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) throughout your apartment. For a toddler with a developing respiratory system and immune response, this continuous exposure is a primary health hazard. The persistent sniffling is a strong clinical indicator of an allergic reaction or irritation caused by this contaminated air supply.

This is not a minor issue that can be resolved with a simple filter change. Disturbing the mold by removing the filter has likely already caused a release of spores. Professional remediation is critical to address the contamination within the AC unit itself, the ductwork, and the affected wall cavity. UAE regulations, particularly those set by Dubai Municipality, emphasize the importance of indoor air quality, and a professional assessment is required to determine the full scope and execute a safe, compliant remediation protocol.

I strongly recommend you cease operation of the AC unit immediately and contact a certified professional. For a situation involving a child's health, you should seek an inspection as soon as possible. Our team at Saniservice is equipped to conduct a comprehensive assessment and perform the necessary hygienization and remediation.
