How to remove closet mold in humid climates permanently?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed these strange black spots appearing in the corners of our bedroom closet in Jumeirah. I think it might be from all the humidity we've had lately, and I’m worried it's making my allergies worse. What's the best way to get rid of it for good without damaging the built-in shelves?

Based on the conditions you've described in Jumeirah, you are likely dealing with a classic case of surface mold growth, exacerbated by the UAE's high ambient humidity and condensation from year-round AC operation. The black spots are a strong indicator of a moisture issue within the enclosed closet space.

The most critical first step is not to attempt removal with bleach or other DIY chemicals. These can worsen the problem by releasing spores and mycotoxins into the air, aggravating allergies, and often only bleach the mold superficially without addressing the root cause. For a permanent solution, the source of moisture must be identified and controlled.

Begin by thoroughly inspecting the area. Is the closet on an exterior wall? Is there a water pipe or AC condensate drain line running behind it? Is the room's AC unit causing significant temperature differentials, leading to condensation inside the closet? Improving air circulation is paramount. Leave the closet doors open periodically and consider using a small, portable desiccant dehumidifier inside the space to lower the humidity level below 60%, which inhibits mold growth.

For the remediation itself, the built-in shelves require careful handling. If the mold is superficial (covering less than 10 square feet), you may carefully clean non-porous surfaces with a HEPA vacuum and a solution of detergent and water, wearing appropriate PPE (N95 mask, gloves, goggles). However, if the mold has penetrated the porous wood of the shelves, sanding or even replacement may be necessary to remove it completely.

Given your allergy symptoms and the persistent humidity, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. We use thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters to pinpoint hidden moisture sources invisible to the naked eye. Our certified technicians at Saniservice follow strict UAE guidelines for assessment and remediation, ensuring the mold is removed safely and the root cause is eliminated to prevent recurrence.
