How to remove and prevent mold on my villa wall?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for a couple of weeks and I suspect it's mold. I just pulled out our sofa in the living room of our Jumeirah villa and found a huge patch of black mold on the back wall where it was touching. We run the AC constantly but it's obviously too humid. What's the best way to clean this off the wall and what can I do to stop it from coming back for good?

Based on your description, this is a serious mold infestation that requires immediate and professional attention. The black mold growth behind the sofa is a classic symptom of condensation buildup, exacerbated by Dubai's high humidity and the constant cooling from your AC unit, which creates a significant temperature differential on that wall.

Do not attempt to clean this yourself. Disturbing the mold by scrubbing it will aerosolize the spores, potentially worsening your children's respiratory issues. For a patch of significant size, the remediation process must be handled by certified professionals using industry-grade equipment. This includes isolating the area with negative air pressure containment, using HEPA-filtered air scrubbers to clean the air, and applying EPA-approved, UAE-regulated antimicrobial agents to not only remove the visible growth but also neutralize the root colony within the wall.

To prevent recurrence, the underlying moisture issue must be solved. This requires a professional inspection to identify the exact cause. It is likely due to thermal bridging (the cold wall condensing humid air) or a potential slight ingress. Solutions include improving insulation on the cold wall, ensuring your AC system is properly sized and serviced to effectively manage humidity (not just temperature), and using standalone dehumidifiers in problematic areas. For a permanent solution and to ensure the health of your family, I strongly recommend a certified inspection and remediation.
