Can I clean moldy AC duct myself or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our bedroom in Jumeirah seems to be blowing out a really damp, earthy smell that’s making us wake up with stuffy noses. I pulled off the vent cover and saw some black speckling on the inside of the duct, and it’s been like this for a couple of months now. Is this something I can safely clean myself with a bleach solution, or do I need to call in a professional mold inspection company to handle the AC unit?

Based on the symptoms you've described—damp, earthy smell, visible black speckling in the ductwork, and recurring stuffy noses—this strongly indicates a mold contamination within your AC system. This is an extremely common issue in Dubai due to our high humidity levels and the year-round reliance on AC, which creates significant condensation, the primary fuel for mold growth inside units and ducts.

Attempting a DIY clean with a bleach solution is not recommended. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like sheet metal ducts, where mold roots (hyphae) penetrate. It also poses a serious health risk when aerosolized in an AC system and can corrode and damage the delicate evaporator coils and other components. Disturbing the mold without proper containment will only release a high concentration of spores throughout your living space, exacerbating the health issues.

This situation requires a professional inspection and remediation. Our process involves using specialized borescopes to inspect deep within the ductwork and plenum, identifying the full extent of contamination. Remediation is then performed using HEPA vacuuming and EPA-approved, non-corrosive antimicrobial agents, followed by addressing the underlying moisture source to prevent recurrence. For a thorough assessment and a definitive solution to safeguard your health and your AC unit, I strongly recommend calling our certified team at Saniservice on 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or emailing hello@saniservice.com.
