Is this mold causing my husband's allergies?« Back to Previous Page

We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed black, speckled patches forming behind our bedroom wardrobe, which is against an exterior wall. It’s gotten worse since the heavy dew and humidity started a few weeks back, and my husband has been waking up with a stuffy nose and itchy eyes. Is this mold and could it be the cause of his allergies, or is it something else we should consider?

Based on your description of black, speckled patches forming on an exterior wall, exacerbated by recent high humidity and dew, it is highly probable that you are dealing with a mold colony. The exterior wall location is a classic hotspot for condensation in Dubai's climate, as the significant temperature differential between the air-conditioned interior and the hot, humid exterior creates a perfect environment for mold growth on cooler surfaces.

Your husband's symptoms—waking with a stuffy nose and itchy eyes—are consistent with mold allergies (allergic rhinitis). Mold spores are a known allergen and irritant. When disturbed by air currents (even from movement in the room or the AC system), these microscopic spores become airborne and are easily inhaled during sleep, leading to the symptoms you describe. Prolonged exposure can also lead to more severe respiratory issues.

While over-the-counter antihistamines may provide temporary relief, they do not address the source of the problem. The mold colony will continue to grow and release spores until it is professionally remediated. It is crucial to have the situation assessed by a certified mold inspector. They will conduct air and surface sampling to identify the species and concentration of mold, which is vital for determining the correct remediation protocol, especially since some species can be more problematic than others.

Do not attempt to remove this yourself with bleach, as this can agitate the colony, releasing a larger cloud of spores, and often fails to address the root moisture problem.
