How to treat and dry black mold under wet carpet?« Back to Previous Page
|
Our AC unit in the bedroom has been leaking a bit of water onto the carpet for a couple of weeks. I just pulled back the corner of the carpet and found a few small black spots underneath that have a really damp, earthy smell. I’m worried it’s the start of black mold, especially with how humid it gets here. What’s the best way to dry this out and treat it myself to stop it from spreading?

Based on your description of water leakage from the AC unit, visible black spots, and a damp, earthy smell, you are very likely dealing with the initial stages of mold growth, potentially including Stachybotrys chartarum (black mold). The high humidity and constant AC use in Dubai create a perfect environment for this, as condensation and leaks provide the persistent moisture mold needs to thrive.
Your immediate action is critical. First, stop the moisture source. Turn off the AC unit and have an HVAC technician repair the leak. This is non-negotiable; without fixing the source, any cleaning is temporary. For drying, you must remove the affected section of carpet and the underlying underpad completely. Merely pulling back a corner is insufficient, as mold grows laterally. Expose the subfloor. Use high-velocity air movers and industrial dehumidifiers—not household fans—to dry the area and the subfloor thoroughly. This must be done aggressively within the first 24-48 hours to prevent further colonization. For the small black spots on the subfloor, wearing appropriate PPE (N95 mask, gloves, goggles), scrub the area with a dedicated antimicrobial cleaner designed for mold remediation. Do not use bleach, as it does not kill the roots and can worsen indoor air quality. After cleaning, the area should be re-inspected to confirm all visible growth and staining is gone. However, given the confirmed moisture intrusion and the musty odor—which often indicates a wider hidden problem—I strongly recommend a professional inspection. Our certified inspectors use moisture meters and thermal imaging to assess the full extent of water damage behind walls and under flooring, which is almost always greater than what is visible. DIY methods often miss the root cause, leading to recurrence and potential health risks.
