Is this dangerous mold needing immediate specialist attention?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it’s because of the black spots I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, and the room has felt really damp since the last heavy rains a few weeks ago. Given how humid it gets here, is this something I need to call a specialist for immediately, or can it wait until the weekend?

Based on your description, this situation warrants immediate professional attention and should not be delayed until the weekend. The combination of visible black spots, a recent dampness event (the heavy rains), and correlating health symptoms in children is a significant red flag.

The black spots behind the wardrobe are highly likely to be a mold colony, potentially including Stachybotrys chartarum (often referred to as "black mold"), which is known for producing mycotoxins. The persistent cough in your children could indeed be a reaction to these spores becoming airborne. The Dubai climate, characterized by high humidity and our reliance on year-round air conditioning, creates perfect conditions for mold proliferation, especially after a water intrusion event. The wall behind the furniture likely became damp and, being in a dark, undisturbed area, allowed the colony to establish itself.

In the UAE, property owners and landlords have a responsibility under regulations like Dubai Municipality's Public Health & Safety code to address conditions that can lead to such biological contaminants, which are considered a health hazard. Attempting to clean this yourself is strongly discouraged. Disturbing the colony without proper containment and professional-grade air scrubbing will aerosolize a massive amount of spores, potentially spreading the contamination throughout your home and exacerbating the health issues.

You require a certified mold inspection to identify the species, assess the extent of the contamination within the wall cavity, and determine the source of moisture. This is followed by a professional remediation plan to safely remove the mold and rectify the moisture problem. For the health of your family, I recommend you contact a specialist immediately.
